"Dewey: a small-town library cat who touched the world" by Vicki Myron

DEWEY is the true story of an abandoned kitten who went on to live an extraordinary life, inspiring a single mother, transforming a sleepy library and the inhabitants of its Iowa farm town, and capturing the hearts of animal lovers around the world.

Vicki Myron was a single mom who went back to school and became a librarian (and her family’s first college graduate!). As the director of the Spencer Public Library, her biggest challenge was to raise the spirits of her beloved library’s patrons, the residents of a town mired in the farm crisis of the 1980s. Her solution came in the unlikeliest of places when Vicki found a tiny, bedraggled kitten almost frozen to death in the library’s night drop box. Recognizing the extraordinary strength of this kitten, Vicki received approval from the library board to adopt him as Spencer’s resident library cat. From that moment on, her life – and the town of Spencer – would change forever.

Dewey, as the townspeople named the kitten, grew into a strutting, affable library cat whose antics kept patrons in stitches and whose sixth sense about those in need created hundreds of deep and loving friendships. As his fame grew, people drove hundreds of miles to meet Dewey, and he even ended up the subject of a hit documentary in Japan! Through it all, Dewey remained a loyal companion, a beacon of hope not just for Vicki Myron, but for the entire town of Spencer as it slowly pulled itself up from the worst financial crisis in its long history.

11th Annual Teen Gingerbread House Competition

Do you love gingerbread houses, castles and gingerbread men? You are not alone. From baking it to building it, gingerbread is an annual tradition Americans embrace as part of the holiday season and what can signify an old-tyme Christmas more than the smell of gingerbread baking in the oven. While much has changed, the gingerbread house design still captures the hearts of all ages, especially teens. Once again, the Quincy Public Library invites area teens to participate in the 11th Annual Gingerbread House Competition on Saturday, December 5th, 2009 at 2 p.m. in the Library Annex, 515 York. You are never too old to build a home entirely edible and filled with sugar treats. Teens will have a hands-on opportunity to build gingerbread structures, and then enter them into a contest. As in years past, the structures will be judged in the following categories; most traditional, most original and most creative and all entries will be displayed in the 2nd Floor Lobby during the month of December. So teens the holidays are definitely happening at the library with this delightful annual event!

Named after the Library’s newest card-holder, Leo the Library Lion, Leo’s Little Ones incorporates books that are colorful yet simple, activities, rhymes and songs that encourage movement and parent-child interaction, and props which stimulate the senses.

Each new parent will receive a "Baby and Me" bag filled with tips for reading with your baby, booklists of recommended titles for your baby, and "Leo's Little Ones" weekly program guides so you can follow along with your child during the sessions. Babies will receive an adorable plush Leo the Lion Cub and a Welcome Certificate signed by Leo himself! More importantly, Leo’s Little Ones will give you and your baby a chance to grow, learn, and play with other families in a relaxing setting designed with your newest addition in mind.
