Event Type: Book Club Date: 11/17/2009 Start Time: 1:30 PM End Time: 3:00 PM Description: "The Winter of the World" by Carol Ann Lee
A London-bound funeral train passing through the rain-soaked English countryside is quietly observed by throngs of silent mourners. This sorrowfully muted opening scene sets the tone for this debut novel which takes place in World War I's muddy trenches and during its aftermath. War correspondent Alex Dyer made his name covering the bloody horrors of the war, yet he cannot shake the guilt he feels for not serving on the front lines like his childhood friend Ted Eden. His guilt is compounded by the love he feels for Clare, Ted's wife. As Alex reveals his story, readers will be touched by the poignancy of the fate of maimed veterans and the search and burial of Unknown Soldiers from the Great War. Location: Friends of the Library Conference Room Other Information: The Literary Angles meet on the third Tuesday of every month at 1:30 PM. Book selections are made 3-6 months in advance. Anyone interested in the book discussions are welcome to attend. Each book discussion group covers a large range of topics and crosses between fiction and non-fiction titles.
