Once Upon a Town: The Miracle of the North Platte Canteen
Author
Bob Greene
Review
This is admittedly a "feel good" book, but also a reminder of what incredible things we as a country can do at a local level. A factual account of North Platte, Nebraska's WWII canteen based at the local railroad station. Supplied and operated solely by citizens and private business, the canteen cheered on millions of boys and men heading off to war, and years later, welcomed innumerable returning soldiers on their way home - wherever home happened to be.
The author interviews the men and women who were part of this incredible effort, as well as the now aging soldiers who still weep at the memories of a small town so willing to sacrifice and support and love them all.  Reserve a copy!

Chester
Author
Melanie Watt
Review
This is supposed to be a story about a mouse, but Chester the cat has other ideas. Hijacking the story from the author, Chester sends the mouse packing and tries to rewrite the story with himself as the star. However, the author gets the upper hand in the end, leaving Chester less than happy in a pink tutu. A cute picture book that will leave you laughing out loud.  Reserve a copy!

The Hunger Games
Author
Suzanne Collins
Review
"Every year in the ruins of North America, 24 teens are forced to enter the Hunger Games. Only one winner survives. Every moment is televised." Reality TV - how far is too far? Governments have been using hunger and food as a power tool for centuries and that will probably never change. This is a thought provoking look at a future North America where the government uses food and the threat of killing our children in order to keep peace. A word of warning, this is not a book for the light-hearted as there is graphic teen on teen violence.   Reserve a copy!
