Each month we build either a theme build or a brick challenge build. We keep a journal of building instructions for extra projects we get from Lego and we pull library materials for inspiration. Each club member has a folder journal and at the end of each meeting we take a photo of their build and it goes on the LPLD kids website.

Once Upon a Town: The Miracle of the North Platte Canteen
Author
Bob Greene
Review
This is admittedly a "feel good" book, but also a reminder of what incredible things we as a country can do at a local level. A factual account of North Platte, Nebraska's WWII canteen based at the local railroad station. Supplied and operated solely by citizens and private business, the canteen cheered on millions of boys and men heading off to war, and years later, welcomed innumerable returning soldiers on their way home - wherever home happened to be.
The author interviews the men and women who were part of this incredible effort, as well as the now aging soldiers who still weep at the memories of a small town so willing to sacrifice and support and love them all.  Reserve a copy!

The Good Earth
Author
Pearl S. Buck
Review
This is a classic Pulitzer Prize winning novel published in 1931 that tells the story of a Chinese farmer, Wang Lu, and his family's struggles to survive. It graphically depicts the best and worst times of their lives. It is a timeless story that reveals the true character of a man who has experienced deprivation and abundance. This story helped me appreciate the things in life I often take for granted.   Reserve a copy!
