ReviewsReview: "The Last Patriot" was the February selection for Middletown Public Library"s Reading Group II. I am not a fan of thrillers but this one had several interesting elements. There was a search for a lost book of the Koran, fictional, a final revelation to the prophet Mohammed that his followers assassinated him to suppress. It was found by al Jazari, also a fictional character, an inventor and scientist from the Islamic golden age who encrypted the message in a mechanical device. Thomas Jefferson acquired this device during a military action against the Barbary pirates in 1805. The line from the Marine Corp hymn, "to the shores of Tripoli', refer to this action. This final revelation, the supposed last book of the Koran, was a message of peace and tolerance and would have undercut militant Islam. The characters in this story are more or less action figures from various alphabet soup government agencies. Matthew Dodd, a rogue CIA assassin, is a bit more interesting than most of them. There is a neat surprise ending. What I liked least about this novel was a certain amount fear mongering that is similar to the McCarthy era Communist paranoia.
