Ahoy Mateys! Interested in pirates and princesses? Ever wonder where shipwrecks can be found? Do archaeologists really find buried treasure? Join us to find out in our Underwater Archaeology Activity for kids. During this half hour, fun, science and skills-based lesson and activity for ages 6-11, kids will learn the answers to the questions: What is Archaeology? What is culture? What types of evidence do archaeologists use? What peoples and cultures do archaeologists study around the world and through time? What are the goals of archaeology? What tools do archaeologists use to find sites? How do archaeologists excavate? The lesson ends with a hands-on shipwreck excavation where we will excavate and record artifacts in different areas of the wreck and theorize about what activities took place there. At the end of the activity the kids should be able to solve the mystery of the shipwreck and answer the questions: Who were the passengers? What was the ship used for? How old is the ship?
