On Wednesday, May 6, 2015, join Calvert Library Prince Frederick for an exclusive screening of the acclaimed film based on a Gillian Flynn novel. On a warm summer morning in North Carthage, Missouri, it is Nick and Amy Dunne’s fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick’s clever and beautiful wife disappears from their rented McMansion. Husband-of-the-year Nick isn’t doing himself any favors with cringe-worthy daydreams about the slope and shape of his wife’s head, but passages from Amy's diary reveal the alpha-girl perfectionist could have put anyone dangerously on edge. With an all-star cast of Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike this film directed by David Fincher is a fast-paced, devilishly dark, and ingeniously plotted thriller . Lights go down at 6:00 pm and the film will be followed by a short discussion ending by 8:30pm. Light refreshments and coffee will be served. For more information call Robyn Truslow at (410) 535-0291 or (301) 855-1862.

Meet Nadia Hashimi whose debut novel was a goodreads Best Book of 2014 Finalist. With a drug-addicted father and no brothers, Rahima and her sisters’ only hope lies in the ancient Afghan custom of bacha posh, which allows Rahima to dress and be treated as a son until she is of marriageable age. As a boy, she has freedom that transforms her forever. But if Rahima cannot adapt to life as a bride, how will she survive? Rahima is not the first in her family to adopt this unusual custom. A century earlier, her great-great-grandmother Shekiba, left orphaned by an epidemic, saved herself and built a new life in the same way.
Crisscrossing in time, The Pearl That Broke Its Shell interweaves the stories of these two remarkable women who are separated by a century but share the same courage and dreams.
